Are you sitting down too much?
Could that comfy chair or sofa be the enemy when it comes to staying healthy? The answer, according to a new study, depends on how much time you spend there, regardless of your exercise habits.
Researchers analyzed data from 47 investigations that looked at sedentary time and outcomes for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and all-cause mortality. Greater sedentary time was positively associated with an increased risk for all of the diseases and conditions reviewed, independent of physical activity participation.
However, the adverse effects of sitting on all-cause mortality were more pronounced among participants who did little or no exercise compared to those who moved around regularly.
The researchers say more study is needed to explore the effectiveness of interventions designed to reduce sedentary time at home and at work.
