Not berry good

The recent Hepatitis A outbreak due to frozen berries may be generating lots of questions from consumers who are worried they may have consumed some of the recalled berries.

Department of Health has released information which contains information for both the public and health professionals to assist with providing advice to the public.

So far the cases of hepatitis A have been linked to the 1kg Nanna’s Frozen Mixed berries and the other products have been recalled as a precaution.

Those who have consumed the berries and have no symptoms are not required to have any testing or vaccination and should wait to see if they develop any symptoms before visiting the GP.

Those who are symptomatic should be referred to their GP for further review and serology. For older children and adults, the symptoms include:

Fever;Nausea;Abdominal discomfort;Dark urine; andYellow skin and eyes (jaundice).

Symptoms may last for several weeks but full recovery usually occurs. Many infected people, particularly children less than five years old, show few or no symptoms.

Pharmacists are usually the first port of call for the public and can provide a valuable triage services during times of health alerts. Please remember the symptoms and consider anyone who presents with these symptoms and has consumed frozen berries from the listed products should be reviewed by their GP.
